May 5th 5:00pm: Bring your blankets and lawn chairs to meet and listen to Jim Hightower, enjoy local food from area farmers, and kick back with live music.
We do not know where our food comes from and we are not doing anything about it. We live in a time where the system has gone awry. Our children’s lunches are being marshaled in our schools. When a child can’t eat a PB&J sandwich, something has gone wrong. Who are we as Texans when we cannot grill a steak or eat chips and salsa because we don’t know where it’s from or what’s in it?

Dr. Ikerd will discuss ecological constraints, local agriculture, local democracy, sustainable community development, and the current economic crisis. It should be a fascinating night with one of America’s most sought after speaker in the category of Sustainable Economics.

Our first meeting of the semester will be February 5th at 7pm in MSC 231. Please bring an open mind, a willingness to get involved, and your ideas on how to make an impact on this campus and/or the Bryan/College Station community.
What else is going on during this semester? I’m glad you asked-
Those are a lot of dates. We strongly recommend that you attend the meetings, and encourage you to make time for the free movie screenings and teach ins. It will be worth your while.
During the meetings, we will have opportunities for you to get involved with one of our ongoing projects, or step forth with an idea of your own. Remember, the projects that exist now started out as someone’s ideas, and we encourage all of you to write down the ideas you have the next time you think “it would be nice if…” or “we should really…”
The free movie screenings will be our chance to show you independent films, documentaries, and movies that create an atmosphere of change, inspire, and provoke discussion. If you have a suggestion for a film that you think is worth watching, please don’t hesitate to send us an e-mail.
During the teach ins, we will have the chance to bring in members of the community to speak to you about many different subjects ranging from micro-credit/micro-finance to sustainable agriculture practices. Hopefully, this can be a chance to learn something new, to incite a sense of community, and to promote personal responsibility.
