Community Service with an Enterprising twist!

A common platform for social entrepreneurs, we provide resources to help utilize entrepreneurial principles towards community service projects. We have launched several projects through our own members as well as in collaboration with various organizations to help make a difference in the Bryan/College-Station community. A social entrepreneur is someone who recognizes a social problem and uses entrepreneurial principles to organize, create, and manage a venture to make social change. They key to making social change, however, relies on the ability of people to begin to think of the traditional business models in untraditional ways. This requires a change in the individual’s outlook to start viewing ‘profit’ in terms of not only financial profit but in terms of people’s livelihood. The Association is committed to promoting socially and ecologically responsible initiatives that facilitate a societal benefit drawn from business mindset, and is committed to helping educate, motivate, and empower people to pursue these goals.

An ‘entrepreneur’ is one who organizes, operates or assumes the risk of a business venture. A ’social entrepreneur’ is one who does all of this for the good of the community. Most business move with the fist of corporate greed while most charitable organizations collect donations and put it into projects. Such charities lack the ability to generate income for their projects while the business leads to seek to maximize profits leading to exploitation of man-power and resources. A Social Business is one which take the middle path: you can either call it a financial venture whose very operation supports betterment of society or a non-profit which generates its own income. Such a venture is very much feasible and the Association for Social Entrepreneurship exists to educate and provide support for just that.

Every business involves a certain degree of risk. But success comes much easier when the business is socialized. This is not just a hypothesis but our very experience from our undertakings: When you are set out to do something good for the community, everyone supports you!

We started the group here in Texas A&M University and would love to help you if you wish to start an chapter in your community!

The purpose of this student chapter is to:
1. Increase the number of socially conscious individuals.
2. Promote the advancement of social, environmental, and artistic programs.
3. Develop and participate in programs with congruent organizations.
4. Provide an open forum for the exchange of ideas, both pertinent and beneficial, concerning the societal and environmental well being of the national and global community.
5. To promote positive societal change on a global and local level.

  1. Hello form Nepal,
I am Jiban Baral from Nepal. As a founder, I am running a social enterprise named Alternatives in Pokhara, Nepal.I like your vision and activities for expanding the importance of social entrepreneurship. I am also member of Ashoka Forum for Young Social Entrepreneurs Nepal and I also graduated in 6 months social entrepreneurship program and done internship with social entrepreneurs. Then after I started to work through this organization.
Alternatives is a social enterprise established by young social entrepreneurs. Young people are considered as real agents of change in social, political, cultural and economical and civic aspect. Alternatives is established with the aim of identification and empowerment of youth role in social, political, cultural, economical and civic issues. It also aim to provide proper opportunities, skill and power to the young people in order to make them able to contribute and responsible for the nation. Alternatives envision a society where young people are considered as real agents in social, political, cultural, economical and civic aspects. It also visions to value young people, not just recipients or targets for services rather considered active entrepreneurs with the meaningful role in the development of their communities and their nation. Alternatives activities is directed to provide suitable environment and opportunities for young people, as they are entrusted for their skills, creativity, progressive and change making opinion. Along with that is directed to find new possibilities for young people in civic level entrepreneurship.

Is there any chances to promote your organization and activities in Nepal. I think it is very improtant Nepalese youth as they are facing a big challenges in social sector. If we can promote and empower them to associate in the field of social entrepreneurship as positive change makers, it will be the great contribution for us.

In Nepal, there is very less chances to study social entrepreneurship as univiersity’s subject so we started some local entrepreneurship classes for youth and women of rural areas in our state. We are based on local resources and running our acitivities in rural and urban areas to promote entrepreneurship.

if you want to more plz visit our web http://www.alternatives.com.np
