Maroon Bike Project

Our goals include:

  1. Construct simple, sturdy bikes from parts salvaged from unused, abandoned bikes
(the 500 bikes removed from campus by Transportation Services is a promising resource for this)
  2. Provide a time and place to build these bikes
  3. Provide a time and place for education, such as how to fix common problems one may experience with a bike.

Have you ever wanted to learn how to fix your bicycle? Or even how to build your own bike? Knowledge like this is something the Maroon Bike Project can provide. Our three principle goals are to provide:

- Bike education

- Bike awareness and safety

- ‘Build-a-bike’ facilities

Currently, the number of bikers on campus is booming, and that number is steadily increasing. You may even be a biker yourself. If so, that is GREAT! However, we encourage not only the use of bikes but a love and passion for bikes. At the Maroon Bike Project, volunteers will be available to assist you with working on, tweaking, cleaning, overhauling, etc. your bike. The key to this is that you, the bike owner, actually learn how to do it yourself. This enhances the bond between human and bike and ensures that you love and cherish it for years to come.

As mentioned, with constantly rising gas prices and a general turn towards an environmentally friendly campus, the number of bicycle commuters is on the rise. And along with that, the issue of bike safety and awareness must be addressed. The Maroon Bike Project will increase bike education and awareness by simply existing and by sharing the knowledge of these topics in the shop. Educated volunteers will share their knowledge of bike education and awareness with any and every student, faculty and staff member interested.

If you do not own a bike, we especially encourage you to get involved in the Maroon Bike Project. We will have a library of bike parts so that you can come by the shop, and with the delicate guidance of a knowledgeable volunteer, construct a bike of your very own from the ground up. This will create an attachment between you and your new bike that will last a lifetime.

Yielding such benefits as less noise and air pollution, less traffic, increased health, and safer all-around biking conditions, let’s all gather at the shop, share some laughs and sweat, and give biking a chance. Enjoy!
